Alternative Treatments for Borderline Personality Disorder

Alternative remedies and treatments for Borderline Personality Disorder are becoming increasingly popular in western society. There is a wide range of treatments available that have been reported to help relieve the symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder. These treatments include: Naturopathy, Aromatherapy, Acupuncture, Music Therapy, Color Therapy, Light Therapy, and Homeopathy.

NOTE: The treatments described in this article are being reported as supplemental alternative treatments only, and NOT recommended to replace the medications prescribed by your doctor. Always check with your doctor before taking any new and/or supplemental treatments.

Naturopathy:

The name Naturopathy comes from the word “nature.” This is a form of therapy that uses nature to treat and help relieve the symptoms of illness. Naturopathists use leaves, stems, flowers, berries and the roots of plants to treat illness.

Natural and herbal medicines are widely used in and throughout the east, and are now becoming more and more utilized in the west as well. Natural medicine is often used to treat depression and anxiety, among other symptoms. The positive thing about herbal (natural) treatment is that it helps to treat the cause/root of the problem rather that just alleviating the symptoms. Usually, you can find a Naturopathy Center listed in your local yellow pages. However, you need to be aware that these treatments can be expensive, and are usually not covered by insurance.

Aromatherapy:

Although Aromatherapy is used to treat a variety of ailments, some people often use aromatherapy oils whether they are ill or not, just to help them relax.

Aromatherapy is the use of fragrant oils. The scent these oils release enters the upper respiratory tract and stimulates the nerve connected directly to the limbic area of the brain. The limbic area of the brain is responsible for learning, memory, and emotion. People who believe in Aromatherapy believe that psychological changes can occur when using aromatherapy oils correctly. This is why it is possible that Aromatherapy will have a positive effect on the mental state of patients with Borderline Personality Disorder.

Following are some of the oils which may be used to help relieve the symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder:

• Lavender: Aids relaxation and is sometimes use in meditation.
• Pine: Believed to be strengthening and stabilizing.
• Angelica: used for relieving feelings of hopelessness.
• Basil: Improves feelings of fatigue. Is often used as a general nerve tonic. Is thought to bring mental clarity, aid concentration and reduce anxiety.
• Bay: Relieves feelings of hysteria. Has a sedative effect.
• Chamomile: Aids relaxation, encourages calmness. Useful for calming hyperactive children.
• Clary Sage: Calming quality. Relieves insomnia, paranoia, panic and hysteria.
• Juniper: Used to improve feelings of apathy, paranoia, confusion, anxiety, tremors, and paralysis. Is also thought to hold diuretic properties.
• Marjoram: May encourage coping with grief and relieve insomnia.
• Spikenard: Used to encourage grounding.

Suggestions for Use:

Place a few drops of essential oil into a bowl of steaming water. Inhale the vapors for 15 to 30 minutes. (This is also recommended for relief of colds and blocked sinuses).

Mix essential oil(s) with distilled water (no more than 15 drops of oil per ounce of water) and use as a floral spray.

Place a few drops on a cloth or piece of fabric. Use a scarf on place on pillow.

Use as massage oil. Note: Diluting is recommended as changes can happen extremely fast.

Do not use the following oils when pregnant:

Basil, cedar wood, clary sage, fennel, jasmine, juniper, lavender, marjoram, myrrh, rose, rosemary, sage and thyme.

Do not use the following oils if you have epilepsy:

Camphor, fennel, hyssop, sage and rosemary disinfectants, antibacterials and antifungals.
