Alternative Treatments for Borderline Personality Disorder – Part Two
There is a wide variety of alternative treatments available that have been reported to help relieve the symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder, including: Naturopathy, Aromatherapy, Acupuncture, Music Therapy, Color Therapy, Light Therapy, and Homeopathy. In Part One of this series, we discussed Naturopathy and Aromatherapy. In this article, we will discuss Acupuncture and Music Therapy. NOTE: The treatments described in this article are being reported as supplemental alternative treatments only, and NOT recommended to replace the medications prescribed by your doctor. Always check with your doctor before taking any new and/or supplemental treatments. Acupuncture: Acupuncture originated in China approximately 3,500 years ago, and is still one of the oldest and most widely used techniques for healing in the world. Acupuncture is a component of traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine is based on the theory that "Qi" (pronounced "chi"), is a vital force, or energy, responsible for controlling a person’s mind and body. Qi is believed to flow through the body via channels, or pathways, which are called meridians. There are a total of 20 meridians: 12 primary meridians – which correspond to specific organs, organ systems or functions – and eight secondary meridians. Traditional Chinese medicine states that imbalances in the flow of Qi cause illness, and that correcting its flow will restore the body to balance. According to Traditional Chinese medicine, these meridians contain as many as 2,000 acupuncture points. An acupuncture point is a place where Qi can be stimulated to restore the body’s balance and health. Specific acupuncture points are believed to stimulate specific organs and bodily functions. Modern theories suggest that acupuncture may stimulate the nervous system and/or cause a person’s body to produce natural hormones (endorphins), which reduce pain. Acupuncture treatment involves placing very thin metal needles into the skin at specific acupuncture points. The needles are left inserted for a period of time (15 – 30 minutes on average). Treatment usually involves multiple sessions over a period of weeks or months. Music Therapy: Music therapy techniques may have significant, positive influences in the treatment of developmental, mood and anxiety disorders. The potential benefits of music therapy techniques include: helping to break patterns of isolation; facilitate and support the desire to communicate; and teach social skills. The aim of music therapy is to involve the person in singing, listening, moving, playing instruments, and creative activities in a systematic, prescribed manner to influence change in the person’s targeted responses or behaviors. The music therapist creates a familiar (musical) environment which encourages positive interpersonal interaction and allows the person the freedom to explore and express him/herself creatively/musically.
