Borderline Personality Disorder by Definition

Borderline Personality Disorder by definition is often a devastating mental condition, both for the person who has it, as well as those around him/her.

Whether shaped by harmful childhood experiences or by brain dysfunction, people who are diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder live in a world of both inner and outer turmoil. They have difficulty with regulating their emotions, and are often in a state of emotional upheaval. They have distorted self-images, and often feel worthless, seeing themselves as fundamentally bad or damaged.

While people with the disorder might yearn for loving relationships, at the same time they might typically find that their mood swings, impulsivity, and anger frequently push other people away. Then they are even more frustrated, as they sense their inability to control these behaviors.

People with Borderline Personality Disorder have elements of any or all of the Personality Disorder categories listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM- IV) combined, which lead to an unstable and stormy lifestyle.

These people tend to be overly dramatic; to have intense but unstable interpersonal relationships; to place unrealistic demands upon their friends, family, and others; to be acutely sensitive to abandonment; and to exhibit self-defeating and very often self-destructive behaviors.

Substance abuse, self-mutilation/self-injury, and suicidal behavior are frequently present in people with Borderline Personality Disorder.

At one time, people with the disorder were considered to be the most demanding and difficult of all patients to treat and, out of this, a special type of psychotherapy evolved. This type of treatment is called Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and was researched and developed by a psychologist named Marsha Linehan, PhD.

A high percentage of patients who have Borderline Personality Disorder also have co-morbid disorders. Co-morbid disorders are other mental disorders or mental illnesses (or physical illnesses or conditions such as Autism or Mental Retardation) that a patient has at the same time as Borderline Personality Disorder. Some of these co-morbid disorders may include: Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, depression, and Post-Traumatic Disorder.

Post-Traumatic Disorder is possibly the most common co-morbid disorder in patients with Borderline Personality Disorder, because many patients report childhood sexual abuse or abandonment.

Although definitive data is lacking, it has been estimated that approximately one to two percent of American adults have Borderline Personality Disorder. The disorder most often occurs in young women; about one in every 33 women. This is compared to one in every 100 men.
