• Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is also known as Personality Disorder–Borderline Type.

• BPD is also known as Emotional Regulation Disorder (ERD).

• BPD affects over 2% of the U.S. population (between 5.8-8.7 million people).

• BPD is more common than schizophrenia or Bipolar Disorder.

• 75% of people with BPD are female and usually within childbearing age.

• Very little research has been conducted to investigate BPD in men.

• People with BPD are reported to be frequent users of mental health resources.

• 20% of people with BPD spend time in psychiatric hospitals.

• 11% of people with BPD are treated in outpatient clinics.

• 70-80% of people with BPD exhibit self-injury (self-harm) behaviors such as self-mutilation, cutting, burning, scratching, etc.

• People who have BPD are more likely to self-harm because of 2 reasons: (1) as a response to impulsive urges; and (2) as part of a suicidal gesture.

• Approximately 10% (1 in 10) people with BPD successfully complete a suicide attempt.

• Successful suicide rate doubles with a history of self-destructive behaviors and previous suicide attempts.

• 69-75% of people with BPD exhibit self-destructive behaviors such as self-mutilation, chemical dependency, eating disorders and suicide attempts.

• Only two personality disorders are associated with self-harm behavior. One is Antisocial Behavior Disorder and the other is BPD.

• 50% of people with BPD experience Clinical Depression.

• At least 50% of people with BPD also suffer from Major Depressive Disorder, Dysthymia, or even both.

• Approximately 25% of people with BPD also meet the criteria for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
