There are many myths about Borderline Personality Disorder, not just among
the community, but among some mental health professionals as well. These myths
can be an obstacle in the treatment of the disorder, and some can even make the
disorder worse, if believed.
Following are some of the common myths about Borderline Personality Disorder:
1. You have to be a "cutter" to have Borderline Personality Disorder. You
have to have all of the criteria listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual
of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) to have Borderline Personality Disorder.
2. If you have Borderline Personality Disorder, you will never get better.
3. You have a basic problem with your personality – you are fundamentally
flawed.
4. Borderline Personality Disorder is caused only by abuse (physical, sexual or
emotional).
5. People with Borderline Personality Disorder need to go into psychotherapy and
remember the trauma from past abuse and always feel the pain in order to resolve
it.
6. All people with Borderline Personality Disorder are the same. They act the
same way, feel the same way, etc.
7. There is no such thing as Borderline Personality Disorder.
8. People with Borderline Personality Disorder are just manipulative, bad
people, and hurt other people on purpose.
9. Reasoning with someone who has Borderline Personality Disorder about their
behavior, thoughts or feelings will make a difference.
10. Family can have control over their loved one’s illness.
11. Medication will not help people who have Borderline Personality Disorder,
and these people are weak for taking medication.
12. All psychotropic medications are addictive.
13. All psychiatrists know how to treat Borderline Personality Disorder.
14. All researchers agree on the etiology (cause) of Borderline Personality
Disorder.
15. Everything is known that needs to be known about the Borderline Personality
Disorder – no more research needs to be done.
16. It is always the parent’s fault if the child gets Borderline Personality
Disorder.
17. It is the person’s fault if they have Borderline Personality Disorder.
18. People with Borderline Personality Disorder are always in control during
rages.
19. People with Borderline Personality Disorder always know what they do when
they are in an episode.
20. People with Borderline Personality Disorder should not have to ask
forgiveness for the things they do when in an episode if they cannot remember
them.
21. Having Borderline Personality Disorder means that the person is "crazy."
22. Borderline Personality Disorder means you have more than one personality.
23. All people with Borderline Personality Disorder need is medication – therapy
is not necessary (or vice-versa).
24. If you have Borderline Personality Disorder, you can’t have Bipolar
Disorder, too (or any other disorder).
25. There is one medication (or combination of medications) that will treat all
people with Borderline Personality Disorder.
