Borderline Personality Disorder: What You Can Do About It
There are estimates that between 10-14% of the American population have Borderline Personality Disorder. You may be wondering if you are one of these people; or, you may even have been diagnosed with the disorder. You may be the spouse (or significant other) of someone who has Borderline Personality Disorder. Either way, you may be wondering what you can do about it. Borderline Personality Disorder can lead to suffering for both the person with the disorder and those whose lives they affect. Borderline Personality Disorder is linked to high conflict; divorce; self-injury; suicide; substance abuse; child abuse; physical, sexual, and emotional abuse; eating disorders; dysfunctional (“stormy”) interpersonal relationships; estrangement from family members; and much more. Even so, people with Borderline Personality Disorder can get better, but it's a slow process. Those that have recovered have had significant others who were very supportive and caring, and yet enforced boundaries and made it clear which behaviors they would not tolerate. Often, this provided the person with Borderline Personality Disorder with the motivation to get better. What can you do to make the person with Borderline Personality Disorder in your life to seek treatment? Ask yourself: “What is the one thing in my life that is the most difficult thing for me to do (change)?” What is that one thing? Lose weight? Change jobs? Overcome low self-esteem? Think about how hard this one thing has been for you to do, no matter how hard you have wanted to do it, or how long you have tried to do it up until now – and that has been even with being motivated to change. Now, imagine if you have not wanted to do this one thing. What are the chances that you would lose weight…change jobs…overcome your low self esteem? The chances would be pretty low, don’t you agree? Now… imagine that you didn't want to do this one thing, or that you didn’t want to do it as badly as you do – that you didn’t want to change at all. What if you didn’t even recognize that there was a problem at all? Recovery from Borderline Personality Disorder is a hard thing to do, especially in the face of denial. For the person with Borderline Personality Disorder, recovery may involve facing traumatic childhood abuse or abandonment, or deep-rooted feelings of guilt and shame. People with Borderline Personality Disorder sometimes feel stigmatized. The only way for people who have Borderline Personality Disorder to recover is for them to want it very badly – badly enough to want to change, and you cannot make someone want this, any more than someone can make you want to change yourself. This is something that has to come from within him/herself. First, however, they have to acknowledge that there even is a problem, and many people with Borderline Personality Disorder cannot do this. What can you do if you are the person with Borderline Personality Disorder? If you have Borderline Personality Disorder and you honestly want to change, seek out a therapist who specializes in treating patients with Borderline Personality Disorder; someone who is familiar with Dialectical Behavior Therapy. This type of therapy was developed specifically to treat people who have Borderline Personality Disorder. Recovery from Borderline Personality Disorder is possible, but it will be a difficult and painful process. You have to want it very, very badly, and to be willing to do whatever it takes to be successful. It will take time, but it will be worth it in the end. What can you do to make yourself feel better right now? Do something good for yourself. Have some fun. Take a walk. Stop drinking or abusing drugs (if you are). Learn everything you can about Borderline Personality Disorder – from your local library or the Internet. Join a local Borderline Personality Disorder support group.
