Cure vs. Recovery from Borderline Personality Disorder

As of this time, there is no cure for Borderline Personality Disorder, but there is recovery from the disorder – meaning that one can get better. There is treatment for the disorder, as in medication and psychotherapy. The degree of recovery depends upon the person who has Borderline Personality Disorder and the amount of willingness to change his/her (self-destructive) behaviors.

Borderline Personality Disorder, like other psychiatric disorders, is not like a physical condition for which you can just take medication and be cured. There has been a great deal of research in the field of Borderline Personality Disorder, but there is still not a cure for the disorder. However, as in other mental disorders, such as Bipolar Disorder, there is management of the disorder – there is treatment for the disorder – and, in the case of Borderline Personality Disorder, you can get better. This is called recovery, and there are degrees of recovery. Some people refer to a high degree of recovery as “high functioning” Borderline Personality Disorder. In other words, you still have the disorder, but you are in a state of recovery, much like being in remission from a physical disorder.

For some people, “getting better” from Borderline Personality Disorder means simply treating the symptoms of the disorder. Treating the physical symptoms of the disorder can be done through medication. Antidepressants, mood stabilization medications, and anti-anxiety medications have been successful in treating patients with Borderline Personality Disorder.

However, the emotional symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder are more difficult to treat. Some of these symptoms are buried deep into the psyche of the person with the disorder, going back as far as the developmental stages of childhood. Issues of childhood abuse and abandonment are very common in people who have Borderline Personality Disorder. These issues are brought out in psychotherapy, and awareness of these issues is the first step in recovery. Unfortunately, for most people with the disorder, awareness of this early trauma brings with it a great deal of emotional pain, and they are unwilling to go further with treatment. These people will remain at a low degree of recovery.

Once a person with Borderline Personality Disorder is aware of early trauma, they are made aware of the connection between this early trauma and their current behavior that is associated with this trauma. Past pain is brought into their present reality, and they need to learn ways of positively dealing with the pain, rather than the self-destructive ways they have most likely been dealing with it. This includes probable abusive behavior towards other people as well. Through psychotherapy, they can continue to get better, learning how to deal with their past, their problems with identity and with relationships, problem solving, and ways to make their lives (and future) better. These people will continue to grow and change, and will attain a high degree of recovery.

The process of recovery is an “up-and-down” process. There will be both improvements and set-backs, sometimes at the same time. There can be improvement in one area, while there can be a set-back in another area; but persistence and a willingness to change, whatever it takes, can lead to a happy and productive life – to recovery from Borderline Personality Disorder.
