Getting Better from Borderline Personality Disorder
You can get better from Borderline Personality Disorder, even though there is still no cure for the disorder at the present time. In other words, people who have Borderline Personality Disorder can learn to lead happy and productive lives, in spite of having the disorder. Much of the suffering associated with Borderline Personality Disorder can be treated with medication, psychotherapy, proper diet and exercise, the right amount of sleep, positive affirmations, a positive attitude, courage, a willingness to change, and a great deal of determination. Having a good support system will help as well. Because there is no cure for Borderline Personality Disorder, you will always have the disorder, but getting better from it is much like going into remission from a physical disorder. Over time, the symptoms of the disorder will lessen, and you will feel “normal” – as if you don’t have the disorder. For the person with Borderline Personality Disorder, the first part of getting better means treating the symptoms of the disorder. Some of the symptoms are physical, such as anxiety. Anxiety can be treated with anti-anxiety medications. Other symptoms, such as depression and anger, are emotional symptoms, but these can also be treated with medications, such as Antidepressants and Mood Stabilizers. Stress is a symptom that can come from emotional sources, but reflected in physical ways. Either way, there is medication that can reduce stress levels as well. The second part of getting better from Borderline Personality Disorder comes from psycho-therapy. As stated above, stress can come from emotional sources. Medication can treat the physical source, but psychotherapy goes deeper, to deal with the actual source of the stress. Through psychotherapy, you will learn how to cope with stress – both the original source of your stress, and the stress that we all have to live with on a daily basis. The next part of getting better from Borderline Personality Disorder involves recognizing self-destructive behaviors. Once you recognize these behaviors, you can change them. Then you can learn new, healthy behaviors, and will be able to make better choices about your life in the future. This will mean continued psychotherapy, delving into your past to find out where you originally learned your negative behaviors and how you respond to them. This, of course, is a big simplification of the process. One of the main characteristics of someone with Borderline Personality Disorder is poor self-esteem, stemming from a negative self-image, or difficulty with sense of self. This goes back to early stages of development, or a “core wound of abandonment,” where your needs were not met as a child. Many people with Borderline Personality Disorder report child abuse (mental, emotional, and/or physical) and/or abandonment. Many of these people never felt loved as a child. You will have to explore your feelings about yourself, and learn how to like and, ultimately, to love yourself, and to love other people. This will come with time. You can get better from Borderline Personality Disorder, but it will not happen overnight. With time and effort, you can learn to live a happy and productive life, in spite of having the disorder.
