An Overview Of Light Therapy

Although not a medical treatment, many people with borderline personality disorder, particularly those who tend to suffer more from the major depressive episodes than manic episodes, report some relief from the depression if they use light therapy.

Light therapy is the use of bright light similar to sunlight for periods of time each day (especially during winter months) to elevate mood and prevent what is known as SAD, or Seasonal Affective Disorder.  This is a common occurrence in people with mood disorders as well as those living in northern climates who do not get much sunlight in winter months and so tend to suffer more depression during the shorter days of the long winters.

Research has confirmed a link between the proper kind of light (including natural sunlight and the type of full spectrum light produced by light therapy boxes) and increased seratonin production.  When the body increases seratonin production, this leads to a natural antidepressant effect and helps alleviate the tendency toward depression and contribute to a stabilized mood.

While light box therapy can in no way substitute for medications, it can be an effective adjunct for minimizing depression, especially during the winter months.  Be sure you discuss this first with your doctor, however, to see if this is an option that is right for you.
