Personality Disorder Borderline Type
Personality Disorder Borderline Type is a disorder characterized by impulsive actions, mood instability, and chaotic interpersonal relationships. Personality disorders are recurrent, chronic patterns of behavior which impair relationships and a persons ability to work. The cause of Personality Disorder Borderline Type is unknown, although researchers suspect a biological cause (imbalance of chemicals in the brain) and/or an environmental cause. People who have Personality Disorder Borderline Type are impulsive in areas which have a potential for self-harm. These areas include: alcohol and/or drug abuse, sexual promiscuity and other sexual risk-taking behaviors, etc. Risk factors for Personality Disorder Borderline Type include the following: Abandonment issues in childhood and/or adolescence Sexual abuse Disrupted and/or dysfunctional family life Poor communication within the family Personality Disorder Borderline Type tends to occur more often in women. It also tends to occur among hospitalized psychiatric patients as a co-morbid disease, or a personality disorder which is accompanied by another psychiatric disorder (mental illness). Usual symptoms of Personality Disorder Borderline Type include intense and unstable relationships with others, with extreme shifts from love to hate and back again. People who have this disorder will usually engage in frantic efforts to avoid abandonment, whether this abandonment is real or just imagined. People who have Personality Disorder Borderline Type will also have uncertainties about their own identity or self-image. They may tend to see things in terms of extremes everything will either be all good or all bad. These people also typically view themselves as victims, which usually stems from child abuse, either sexual or stemming from abandonment as a child. They will blame their issues on outside circumstances or on other people, and will rarely take responsibility for themselves, their behavior, or their problems. Other symptoms of Personality Disorder Borderline Type may include: frequent displays of inappropriate anger or rage; recurrent acts of self-injury such as wrist cutting, overdosing, or self-mutilation; feelings of emptiness or isolation; fear of being alone; impulsivity; overspending and overeating; substance abuse; and/or sexual promiscuity. A diagnosis of Personality Disorder Borderline Type is based on a psychological evaluation and the history and severity of the persons symptoms. Treatment consists of a combination of medication (antidepressants and/or mood stabilizers) and therapy.
