Psychotherapy: An Overview of the Different Types- Part One

Many types of psychotherapy are available for people with Borderline Personality Disorder. Some focus on understanding past issues, while others focus on changing current behavior patterns. Psychotherapy is a general term for the way of treating mental illnesses by talking with a mental health professional about your disorder and related issues. This is also known as “talk therapy,” psychosocial therapy, counseling, or, simply, therapy. In Part One, we will discuss psychotherapy in general, as well as the first three types of psychotherapy.

Through sessions of psychotherapy, some things you may do include the following:
• Learn about the causes of Borderline Personality Disorder so that you may better understand it
• Learn how to identify behaviors or thoughts that negatively affect your life so that you can change them
• Explore your interpersonal relationships and experiences
• Find better ways to cope with your problems and solve them
• Learn how to set realistic goals for your life.

Psychotherapy might help alleviate those symptoms caused by your Borderline Personality Disorder, such as anger and hopelessness, so that you can regain your sense of happiness and enjoyment of life, and so that you may feel some sense of control over it again.

Psychotherapy can involve just a few sessions (short-term), or can involve many sessions over several years (long-term). It can involve individual, couples, group, or family sessions. Sometimes psychotherapy is combined with other types of therapy or treatment, such as medication.
Common types of psychotherapy include:

Art Therapy:
Art Therapy (also called Creative Therapy) uses the creative process to help those people who have difficulty expressing their thoughts and feelings. Creative expression can help increase self-awareness, foster positive changes, cope with symptoms of a disorder, and deal with traumatic experiences. This type of therapy not only includes drawing and painting, but also includes Music Therapy, dance and movement, drama, and even poetry.

Behavior Therapy:
Behavior Therapy focuses on being able to change unwanted or unhealthy behaviors. It typically uses a system of rewards and reinforcements for positive behaviors. It also uses a process called desensitization, which is a way of confronting something that causes discomfort, fear, or anxiety, and overcoming those responses. In other words, if you have a fear of germs that then triggers you to wash your hands excessively, you would be taught techniques to stop you from excessive hand washing.

Cognitive Therapy:
Cognitive Therapy is designed to help you to identify and change your distorted thought (cognitive) patterns which can lead to feelings and behaviors that are self-destructive. This is based on the premise that the way you interpret your experiences in life determines the way you feel and behave. For instance, if you have depression, you see yourself and your experiences in negative ways, and this will worsen the symptoms of depression. Cognitive Therapy focuses on the current problem, rather than addressing past or underlying issues or conflicts.
