Suggestions for Success if You Have Borderline Personality Disorder

If you have Borderline Personality Disorder, the following Suggestions for Success may help you deal with the disorder:

1. Have a positive attitude.
In therapy, you are probably learning that how you think is everything. Therefore, you need to have a positive attitude. Think of being a success, not a failure, and you will succeed.

2. Don’t let go of your dreams.
It may have been a long time ago, but I bet you did have dreams. Try to remember them, and go for them! It’s never too late to pursue your dreams. Write them down – this may make them more real for you as well.

3. Set realistic goals for yourself.
Set realistic goals for yourself, and you can achieve them. Part of your problem has probably been that your goals have been too high to achieve, thus setting yourself up for failure. Writing down your goals will be a physical reminder that can help you as well.

4. Make a daily “To Do” list.
Try making a simple daily “To Do” list, and make it short. When you accomplish those simple goals, you will begin feeling better about yourself. Then you can start making your list a little longer. Eventually, you can set bigger goals for yourself.

5. Beware of negative people (and environments).
Beware of negative people and negative environments, as they will just pull you down. You are trying to be more positive, so surrounding yourself with positive people, and placing yourself in positive environments, will only reinforce your goal of being a more positive person.

6. Keep learning.
Go back to school. Read books. Acquire skills. Get training. Learn from the Internet. Anyway you have to, keep learning. As you “wake up your brain,” you will inspire yourself to set new goals. You will also find yourself more positive about the future.

7. Be persistent, and never give up.
Be persistent, and never give up. The greatest success stories include the inspiration that they never gave up, even when met with failure at first. You may, too, but you must never give up. You’ve heard the expression, “Try and try again.” Be persistent. Work hard, and keep trying. It will be worth it in the end.

8. Learn from your mistakes.
Learn from your mistakes, and from the mistakes of others. It’s ok to make mistakes, as long as you grow from them. Nobody’s perfect. But you can learn from your mistakes, and that’s what you must do. Then you will be successful in your recovery, in your life.
