The prison population of England and Wales now exceeds 82,000. Nine out of 10 of those people has at least one diagnosable mental health problem, such as depression, anxiety, drug or alcohol misuse or personality disorder: a majority have two or more, combined with a range of other difficulties and disadvantages.
